The VM research collection provides loans of skins, skeletons, and fluid-preserved specimens from its collections for scientific research. All requests must be submited in writing using our application form.

Materials loaned from the Cal Poly Humboldt Vertebrate Museum (HSUVM) should be acknowledged by catalog number in any subsequent publications, reports, presentations or GenBank submissions. A digital copy of any publications or reports should be provided to HSUVM. Loaned materials may only be used for the study outlined in the original proposal and written permission must be obtained for any use outside of the scope of the originally proposed research (including transfer of VM materials to third parties). Specimens on loan should be returned to the VM using the same packing containers and materials, shipping method, and insurance value unless other arrangements are made with the VM curator or collections manager. Loan shipping costs are paid for by the receipient/borrower. Loans are generally made for a period of six months. Graduate student requests for VM loans must be authorized and sponsored by the student's major professor.

Tissue/Destructive Sampling Application

The VM research collection includes fresh tissues which can be loaned for approved research projects. Tissues are commonly collected at the time of specimen preparation and placed into a -20 C or -80 C freezer for long term storage. Various types of tissue are commonly collected. Destructive sampling of other types of specimens in our collection may also be approved, depending on the project.
